Inquiring into Citizen Science

This week we learned about citizen science. Citizen science allows ordinary people to aid scientists in a broad range of efforts by collecting, categorizing and analyzing data. Students researched several different projects on two different websites (SciStarter and Zooniverse).  After researching various projects and splitting into groups, students began collecting various types of data for the projects they selected.  Alayzia, Garret, and Elias were unable to find Monarch butterflies for the Journey North Monarch Migration Tracker, but they did happen to find some bees collecting pollen, which they plan on entering into the BeeSpotter citizen science tracker. Kylee, Charlie, SunChyna, and Lily collected information in the inquiry journals and on the Ipad about the different types of clouds they observed as part of the Globe.gov Cloud Project.  On the way back from the field, Kylee took several samples of different soil types and recorded their locations in her inquiry journal.
