PYP Exhibition 2017: Ben, Caira, Charlie, & Dorthia Field Trip

Ben, Caira, Charlie, and Dorthia are trying to reduce the amount of waste produced at Discovery School. Throughout their exhibition process, they have created a “how to make your own Lunchable” video, designed an animation about reducing waste, researched how to compost pizza boxes, and (most recently) encouraged students to reduce waste through friendly competition. Part of the exhibition process includes extending one’s perspective by interviewing experts and visiting important locations/organizations directly related to the students’ cause. Last week students had the opportunity to interview Laurie, the educational director of Richland County Solid Waste. We then traveled to 3 fast food restaurants where students observed and recorded waste. They found that among McDonald’s, Taco Bell, and Subway, that the latter was the most proactive in reducing waste.  We then traveled to Milliron Recycling Center where we got to see how aluminum soda cans are recycled. We then ate lunch together before returning to school.

While Caira expressed her excitement for being at Taco Bell, Mr. Wicker shouted, “Ben, please don’t bite Charlie’s thumb!”
