Sand Mandalas and the Idea of Impermanence

Transdisciplinary Theme:  Sharing The Planet

Central Idea:  The diffusion of major world religions has had a lasting influence on the modern world.

We learned about the importance, to Buddhists, of practicing contentment and learning the concept of impermanence through the creation and destruction of sand mandalas. Students made their very own sand mandalas, a practice that encourages having a calm mindset and internal peace, much like coloring a picture or putting together a jig-saw puzzle.  Students then let go of their artistic creation by literally letting it go into the flowing creek.
